Drummer with gear if you are ever stuck and drummer-less on a sunday!

I feel so very blessed to live in a beautiful part of the world where people passion and power shine...where the community spirit is alive and brilliant. What we have achieved as a united community in the past two weeks will go down as 'legend'. And one day, ten years from now, a mother and father will sit with their children in the park at Peregian as the music plays and tell them the story of 'how the people Saved Peregian Originals'.

As a resident of Peregian Beach for several years, it is apparent to me that Peregian Originals is not only important for Peregian, it IS Peregian. It has put our town on the map and with every passing event, it continues to foster the ideals that all of us should be advocating; peace, cultural diversity, acceptance, opportunity. Peregian Originals is at the heart of our community. Remove this event and you rip the heart away from our community.

As a father of two young children, Peregian Originals is a one-of-a-kind event that allows my whole family to experience the joys of music. The price of admission – a donation of any kind – is a miniscule price to pay for the massive effort that dedicated volunteers put in week in, week out. Most of all, it provides an opportunity for my daughters to dance with other toddlers, laugh with octogenarians, make friends with out-of-towners and experience music from many cultures; this is priceless.

We live within 700 metres from the event and we do not hear it, nor have we ever had a problem with traffic. If, in particular, it is the latter issue that Councillor Green wrongly believes creates “chaos” in the area after each Originals, then I applaud the combined efforts of Peregian Originals organisers and Council to provide alternate transit options for the December 20 event.

My hope is for this to be a new era of community and Council collaboration to preserve Peregian Originals in its current form so that my daughters can continue to have their lives enriched by this Original treasure for many years to come.

As the shirts say, "a community that strums together comes together".

Letter to SCRC,

I want an explanation from Counsellor Green or the SCRC regarding why our local community was not consulted in regards to the closure of Peregian Originals.

I am one of your voters, as council members you are supposed to represent the views of the community. But no-one was consulted! a decision was made because there were some complaints. Your decision should be fair and balanced and it wasn't. No-one was consulted.

I am asking for a response as to why one of the best free community events on the Coast has to go. As a parent I love going to the Originals as it is a SAFE place for my kids, I can relax when I'm there, the kids and my husband and I always have a very relaxed and chilled and enjoyable time.

Never once have I seen an drunk and dangerous behaviour. In fact the SCRC should be holding up this event as a great event to showcase how alcohol can be well controlled.

Considering this weekend the police have nationally done a huge blitz on drinking... it's just not logical why you would shut down an event that has proven over 10 years to not have problems with alcohol or drugs. Doesn't the council wish to bring the community together.

There is enough hardship at the moment with council rates going up, water going up, jobs going down... times are tough. Peregian Originals makes you smile, brings people together to share joy and enjoy life. Please don't be silly.

Bob if you read this... this is one very unique event in Australia and we should be doing everything we can to support this event to go on.

It is a jewel in the crown of the coast, a feather in your cap.

Why on earth would you shut it down? because of a minority of people making complaints. What about the majority of people that support it...

DON'T WE COUNT? Please as a voter, as a member of the Coolum community. Don't shut down one of the best things we've got going on the coast entertainment wise.

Regards

Angela Vogt.

Crazy that we just took it for granted for so long. Only now do we realise what a difference it makes to so many people...PO is part of what makes the coast unique. Just doesn't seem logical that a few can take it away. I guess the good that come out of this when it's saved, is that the organisers now know that we won't ever take it for granted again and how truly appreciative the coast community is that this is part of their world.

"I support the Save Peregian Originals campaign 100%. I loved performing there, and received an amazing response from the crowd. I think the event is great for giving performers a start and being a part of the vibrant music scene, as well as being a community focused local event, the kind of thing that should happen more in Australia. Peregian Originals gives musicians who perform original music an amazing chance for huge exposure and a truly enjoyable performance opportunity."

Just spent some time trawling through the comments posted on the petition site. The single most common word in these petitions was... wait for it... COMMUNITY. I believe Jay and his team deserve top spot on the podium at the next Sunshine Coast Awards for Regional Service (SCARS), or did Cr Green just award these?

Peregian Originals is such a unique and important event for families and young musicians.

I can't imagine a more perfect Sunday than chilling out in the park with some friends listening to the originals, a drink at the club, a swim at the beach, a look around the shops. It's a safe positive community event and more importantly, it gives our talented musicians a supportive launching pad for their careers. I have recommended it to so many of my singing students looking for opportunities to get performance experience.

Look at the talent that has come out of crowd at the Peregian Originals. We've already heard from Ange Takats, Emily Maguire and Kate-Miller Heidke - all fabulous Queensland musicians that we can be proud to say performed on the Sunny Coast.

Peregian Beach is such a laid back, supportive friendly community I'm really surprised that there is significant opposition to such a rare and wonderful event. I hope that when I come back to Australia that the Peregian Originals are still going strong!

see my letter to the paper.

I wish to have my say on the axing of The Peregian Originals. We moved up
to Peregian
Beach from Brisbane in November 2007 to our newly purchased property at
Pelican Street.
Our property is located 300m from the site of the concerts. We bought into
the area for
its village, its positive atmosphere and community spirit. I and my son
joined the local
surf lifesaving club shortly after our move here and we have embraced our
local community.

One of the major events that happens here are the Peregian markets and the
Peregian
Originals concerts every second Sunday. These activities inject
significant funds into
both the local Surf Lifesaving club and the businesses within the village.

We love the markets and the Originals and do not want to see the Originals
moved to
another location. We go to the Originals regularly and have never seen any
behavior from
patrons that suggest they cause any problems within the local community.

I do not know who the residents are who want to see the Originals go, but
they certainly
do not speak for us. I am very surprised that council have decided to
cancel the event
without at least consulting the Peregian Beach community as a whole to find
out how the
majority of residents feel about this event.

I am also sure that the local business community and local Surf Lifesaving
Club will be
adversely affected by the cancellation of this event.

I say keep the Originals and markets here as they are.

Dear Editor,

I’m concerned by Councillor Russell Green’s depiction of a successful community event as a “rock concert”, leading to such chaos every second Sunday of the month that the locals are “prisoners in their own homes” because hoons park flagrantly across their driveways and urinate on their lawns. Bob Abbot meanwhile, careful to remain ambiguous, states “it’s all got to stop before it ends in tears”. Good work fellas, the reputation of Peregian as a cool place to chuck some doughies and give the finger to its cowering inhabitants gains momentum.

If I was a swaggering, doughie-chucking candidate for industrial deafness and skidded to a halt at Peregian Originals I’d be furious at being mislead by my elders. If, on the other hand, I wanted to spend a Sunday afternoon with three generations of my family listening to good, original music while still retaining the options of having a dip in the ocean, a beer at the surf club, a push on the swings, a few ollies in the skate park, or a coffee at any number of good cafes, there is Peregian... and nowhere else.

Any attempt to replicate Peregian Originals needs a park next to a patrolled beach, together with a variety of interesting shops and cafes in a village atmosphere within 300m of the performers. There will, by definition, be residents in the vicinity too. Surely, the way forward here is for Council to give more than token assistance to Peregian Originals in solving any concerns raised by the locals. Of course, this would mean mature heads and considered solutions instead of knee-jerk reactions. Or is that too original?

The people stopping Peregian Originals are out of their mind. It's one of the few events left in the Sunshine Coast that brings happy people together without the fighting, bad vibes and excess amounts of alcohol.
Sitting on the grass and enjoying Originals with friends, family or even meeting new people cannot be taken from us.
SAVE PEREGIAN ORIGINALS!

Hello I’m a 12 year old musician and I’ve got something to say...

I’ve been attending Perigian Originals for the past 8 years, so since i was a 4. I do gigs around the coast when I’m able to and whenever I’ve gone to the Originals I’ve always dreamt of the day I’d get up on that stage and show everyone what I can do. Suddenly I hear that the council has decided to cancel such a rare, chilled out awesome event that I’ve loved for so many years. Just a few weeks ago I helped a band for the whole afternoon with their instruments and they were saying how much they loved this venue, that the crowd are so supportive and friendly and that Jay Bishoff (the event organiser) has worked so hard and supports so many local musicians and gives everyone a fair go to shine. Whenever I’ve attended Perigian Originals we’ve had to find a car park and it’s never been hard, there’s never been too many cars or a traffic jam. After the event has finished people are very respectful and clean up after themselves and when they leave it’s like the whole event had never happened.

This decision to kill such a unique event has distressed so many local musicians (young and old) as well as other locals. If the council decides to continue with this, they should expect a fight and they will have to put up with even more angry locals. Because as far as I can see there’s more people that love the event than people that don’t. Also when you walk to shops or restaurants, you can’t even here the music, so what are they complaining about?

I hope that the council realises what they have done was perhaps the wrong thing to do and they see that they got it wrong!

Thank you

Jessica Bood

So like 3 people complaned about the originals and hundreds enjoyed it. I think the possitive overweights the negative here.

Kate Miller Heidke

"I have performed at hundreds of venues around Australia, but Peregian Originals is unique. In an age of manufactured music, an opportunity for people to hear grass roots musicians play their own songs in a community setting, for free, is a rare and precious thing. When we performed at Peregian Originals, my partner and I were so struck by the sense of local people coming together (as well as the natural beauty of the setting) that we started to dream about moving to Peregian someday. Artists and audiences both love Peregian Originals and it would be a tragedy to lose it. So what the hell reason would anyone have to close that down?"

Copy of a letter sent to the Council and Newspapers from Emily Maguire!

"Dear Sir

I am a singer-songwriter. Peregian Originals was the last gig I played in Australia before leaving for a UK tour that ended up at the Royal Albert Hall in London. I have just released my third album through Universal in the UK and Europe.

I would like to voice my opposition to council's decision to shut down this incredibly successful concert series. Peregian Originals is one of the best gigs in Australia, and one of the best things about the Sunshine Coast. It has a stunningly beautiful location and joyful community atmosphere as hundreds of people gather to lie in the sunshine and listen to great live, original music for free on a Sunday afternoon. It is unique and very special. I cannot believe that the council have proposed shutting it down.

I have written a blog about it on my website and myspace - see the links below.

This event is run by the people - for the people - and we want to keep it that way. If the council is serious about 'saving' this beautiful event, we ask that it works with the organisers to help find solutions to any problems that have arisen at the current site, which is more than capable of handling this event.

As a regular visitor to my Peregian Beach family I have been struck by the social interaction and inclusion values claerly visible at Peregian Originals events It would be a major blow for community development values for the Council to unecessarily restrict regular free music events when any offsite impacts are shortlived and manageable

THE PEREGIAN ORIGINALS OF THE SPECIES OF MUSICIAN
What more natural selection can there B than
The Peregian Originals of the Species of musician?

At each month's 1st & 3rd Sunday afternoons
Right by the Surf Club of a beach called Peregian
You'll find lotsa laidback locals & dancers so callipygian*
Chillin' out to 4 bands' worth of their Originals tunes!

It's a pleasure 2 be here and join in with this spirit!
I dunno any event that comes anywhere near it!
A few do jeer but it's all of us who really cheer it
With our families & friends close enough to hear it!

Now this event has been happening up to this its 10th year
With music from acoustic folk 2 hip-hop/techno ululations
To soothe & stimulate & entertain this here population
Gathered for companionship and/or post-gig copulation!
Thus this event deserves the community's congratulations
And the right to continue as it always has - RIGHT HERE!!

Yet some people only live to make all others miserable
And complain about anything & everyone that they can
And put pressure on Council to close it down with a ban
'Cause some people just want us all 2 B silent & invisible!
They've already left life behind and crossed the River Stygian
Since they're never happy living anywhere, let alone Peregian!

Sunshine Coast Super Council then tried to assert its power
By calling 'IT'S TIME for the Originals to be emasculated!'
And for us to be more regimented and over-regulated
For this dream to be cemented in and strictly stipulated
For this fun to be funnelled away and then evaporated!
All that has done is make we the people FLOURISH & FLOWER!

Well, if the Peregian Originals are consigned to castoff history
Then I don't think that our future offers any enticing mystery!
So here at this rally in which we are all sharing
'Cause we do support this event with our caring
Here and now is where we just begin to get daring
No government knows what power we're capable of stripping
Them of when we the people over-run excuses & ego-tripping!

Bring it all on again next year after year!
This is why we all so much love coming here!
Don't U ever ask 'Whatever happened to...?'
The Peregian Originals belongs to all of U!
Council can give up now - it never had a chance
Against the power of people, music and dance!

Never doubt we will return to this great local scene
No matter what is said by the likes of Councillor Green
To get down to the business of pleasure as usual
Where the feeling is fine and friendly and mutual
As it already has been for the decade we've enjoyed
And mingled and mixed until we've been overjoyed
At each month's 1st & 3rd Sunday afternoons
Right by the Surf Club of a beach called Peregian
You'll find lotsa laidback locals & dancers so callipygian*
Chillin' out to 4 bands' worth of their Originals tunes!

What more natural selction can there B than
The Peregian Originals of the Species of musician?

I have travelled to Peregian many times especially for Peregian Originals, & think it is the best event of its kind anywhere in Australia. & when we come, we spend a significant anount of money on food, shopping, etc...surely its something the Counciul should be PROUD of, & promoting!

Without the wonderful music of Peregian Originals to light up our lives, just what would happen to us and our community?
Without the wonderful music of Peregian Originals we would just wither, fade away, grow old before our time, become apathetic, leave each-other lonely, cease to care, misplace our identity, take up susbstances that would never be able to substitute the loss. We would lose the plot all the way to the graveyard, as we became ever more uncomfortably numb!
Without the wonderful music of Peregian Originals, then who could ever want to live there, go there, be there?
SAVE THE PEREGIAN ORIGINALS!
If Sunshine Coast Regional Council can't understand its own community, then it should give up its day job and f-f-f-f-fade away altogether!

Surely we cannot let something this good disappear into thin air!?!?! The Peregian Originals are unique on the Sunshine Coast and brings people together, outside in a happy, carefree and peacefull setting. What is better than good (local) tunes in the park on a Sunday afternoon? Surely the QLD Goverment would be supporting community events like this because it gets QLD'ers outside, being active and supportive. SAVE THE PEREGIAN ORIGINALS!!!!

i've only recently discovered the wonderful sunday afternoon sessions, and am amazed that this gem of a community event is going to be shut down???? it doesnt make sense when it is clearly THE BEST REGULAR MUSICAL EVENT ON THE COAST!!!!!!! not only an opportunity to showcase our brilliant local talent, but also a superb opportunity for folk to relax with family and friends in a safe and harmonious environment. I love this event in this location for a number of reasons

• I feel safe to let my daughter play and hang out in the crowd
• It is right by the beach to swim on these hot days
• There is food, Drinks and the best coffee available at a decent price all delivered with lots of love by volunteers from the surf club
• Has a wonderful chilled out atmosphere amongst the crowd
• 101.3 Noosa Community Radio is there
• The shops are open if I need to grab anything last minute for home
• Oh yea the MUSIC is great however I don’t care who is playing as there is always something to wet my musical taste buds

If this event no longer operates I will always remember many many fond lazy Sundays grooving to the muz and relaxing with friends and family at Peregian originals. Come along on the 20th and make a stand, we deserve this to continue. The radio station has already began an extensive campaign to make our listeners aware of this possible closure/relocation.

Long live Peregian Originals.
If the squeaky wheel gets the oil it might be wise to start an online petition on your website. Show Council that the majority (actual number of people) want the gigs and that the complainers are in the minority. It's obviously essential to work with the Council on this one, hear their concerns and be pro-active with signage and parking.
"It's easier to say no than it is say 'make it happen'" This appears to be SCRC's attitude on most issues.
It's no wonder the Folk Festival moved from Maleny (MSC/SCRC) to Woodford (CSC/MBRC)years ago.

Marc King

December 6, 2009

A truly unique cultural event like this should be attracting support from local government. Instead they have decided to bow down to the self serving agendas of what appears to be a very small minority. I urge everyone that has ever had the privilage of enjoying this chilled afternoon of great vibes and original music to stand up and be counted on this very important issue.

Joelle

December 6, 2009

Peregian Originals is a fabulous community event and one which Council should be doing everything it can to support. It is free, extremely popular and is a great antidote to the direction the Coast seems to be intent on taking. Too much bland and we'll just end up being a big fat loaf of white bread covered in cars and concrete ...

Leroy Sams

Isn't it a shame when all the relaxed easy to please people on the sunny coast, who love nothing more than to chill out in a beautiful park by the sea on a sunday afternoon listening to good music having fun with their family & friends, are now going to have to find something else to do...HEY !!! I've got an idea... Maybe everyone can go to the river @ Noosaville & sit infront of the massive stage that was built for cultural events & entertainment..Oh that's right! No one every plays there either due to a minority of noise complaints & council regulations.

Dan Lyons

December 6, 2009

We must also shut down the beach, I went to the chemist for my depression and constipation medication the other day and I couldn't get a park because of all those selfish bloody family people swimming and having fun at the beach and playing in the park...it must be stopped. Better yet, council should move the beach somewhere else, what about Eumundi or Gympie...Gympie would love a beach there. The world is supposed to revolve around me and my tiny group of superior beings so go away the lot of you and let us be. What's the world coming to when I cant get a park because of some stupid so called 'cultural event'.

There is so much heart and soul in this gathering behind the surf club. The music is fantastic but this is also about community. Jay and team - you've done wonderful work in building and nurturing a unique event that has become part of the fabric of the coast and you deserve better than this. Council needs to hear the many voices that support Peregian Originals and find ways to truly assist its continuation. Go people power!

Jan Hodgson

December 6, 2009

This is a wonderful community event doing no one any harm. It is enjoyed by hundreds. If the vocal minority are whinging about cars parked in front of their houses why cant parking be organised across at the bowls club. The financial benefit the local shops and of course the all important surf club get every fortnight from hundreds of happy Peregian original participants far outweigh any inconvenience perceived by the whinging minority. Please keep this very enjoyable, free community event here at Peregian every fortnight - where it belongs.

Pauline Ryeland

December 6, 2009

I look forward every fortnight to go to Peregian Originals. Its a chance to connect and catch up with friends &I have made many new friends there just from being a regular. Its not just about the music, there is such a strong sense of community there, that it is a very sad thing that council have succumbed to a minority of people complaining. Closing this event will also have a huge impact on all the local businesses as well. What a sad way to end our year, what a sad way to end 10 years of community commitment served by Jay & his team of helpers. Council - you need to wake up and look at the bigger picture please

We will help in any way we can! We have been going on a sunday afternoon for a few years now and we love catching up with friends, children, babies and family. How can we help? I have emailed Russell Green and look forward to a reply...We can not let a few whinging, unhappy people spoil something that is beautiful. We love it and we will fight it! Go the majority!!

I was amazed at the power of the people when it came to saving the Mary River...now it's our time to show council that we are just as passionate about preserving culture as we are about nature! As Jay's letter says, we've been keeping things low key up to this point...I don't think council has any idea what it's about to be hit with. The majority will win this battle of insanity....that's for certain. Long live Peregian Originals!!!

I have filmed and participated in community events in many countries around the world and have never experienced an event so dlightful as Peregian Originals.

I always tell visitors to the event to watch how the kids and dogs behave. They are innocent souls and absolutely delight in the atmosphere that is created at Peregian Originals .

It would a reall show of the courage of his convictions if our elected representative, Russell Green, would stand up in front of the Peregian Originals audience and discuss with us the problems he sees.

Will he make an appearance or just make excuses?

I voted for Russell at the last election but he does not represent my point of view nor the point of view of a very large number of local residents.

I have been filming the event for much of this year and I can say that there is no confusion only a lot of smiling, happy kids, parents and musicians.

Our community and communities around the world need free open events that are a joy for all. We have something very unique at Peregian and the council need to actually come to one of the concerts before they decide.

I want my kids to grow up with some 'CULTURE' here on the coast. I want them to sing, dance, play, learn and be inspired by what Peregian Originals offers. Then, who knows, when they are older they may play there.

Also, who wants to drive to BrisVegas to see great live entertainment when we have it at our doorstep. Lets keep it alive and make it thrive :)

Hey Periginals and Jay,

I just wanted to share.. myself, my husband our two kids and our friends have been going regularly to your awesome event for the past couple of years and we all love it. It is so unique and we are so so lucky to have this right on our back doorstep. I can't thank you enough or say too many good things about all the fun times you have given us and want you to know that we will do anything to help.

Also we did have trouble with the parking when we were newbies.. but once we found out about the underground parking and the other parking round the back of the bowlsy we have not had one single problem with getting in or out and have noticed it seemed to be much more in control after the last lost of restrictions were set in place. Some days I even wondered if it was still on as I couldn't hear any noise or see many people around.. only to be pleasantly surprised on turning the corner to the surf club.

To say 'the amount of chaos that reigns is to great' seems to be rather extreme.
